The novel “(un)arranged marriage”, written by Bali Rai and published in 2001, tells the story of a young Indian man, Manjit, who is born in Britain and has to follow the traditions of his parents’ house. He does not feel comfortable with his family and tries to spend his time outside the house with his best friend, which his father does not like. This fact and other circumstances give his father enough reasons to be angry about him and to start conflicts every day. As he tells Manjit that he will be marrying an Indian girl he never met before, he starts to comprehend that it is nearly impossible to fight against his role in the family, but he tries. He sees his only chance by getting a bad reputation, so that the father of his future-wife will not accept him, but without success. As a consequence to the rebellious behavior of their son, Manjit’s parents organize a family trip to India in order to see him becoming the real Punjabi man they want him to be. They leave him there without a passport, so that he is not able to come back home. As he manages to come back, he is angry about his parents, but after some time he seems to change his mind towards the wedding…

Bali Rai describes the problems of a young man, being a second-generation Indian American, who has problems to find his place in life. Rai shows the reader why it is so hard to be accepted by the family and in school or in other situations and how it feels – in order to manage that - to live two different lives at the same time. The book provides an insight into Indian traditions and the potential for conflicts which come up because of a lack of communication and tolerance within the family.

I think this book gives a lot of thought-provoking impulses for the reader. It helps to think about the problems of migration and reminds the reader of the fact that there are many immigrants living next door, who maybe struggle with similar problems. In my opinion, it is really necessary to deal with problems like they are described in the book. Even though Manjit is maybe not the typical example of an Indian immigrant in America, he surely has many things in common with other teenagers and shares a lot of feelings and fears with them. All in all you can say that it is very important to think about the problems mentioned in the story and this book can help you very well to understand how different cultures could work.
